How the Dream Was Born

Year

History

2000

A tithe of nearly a million dollars launched the birth of the Temple! This enabled us to purchase the land, but much more was needed to bring the temple into manifestation!

2003

The land in Bothell was purchased

2004

The plans were drawn, based on the design of the Ananda Assisi Temple.

2005

80 members pledged to begin paying off the mortgages: $100,000 per year (combined) for 4 years, which will end June 2009. This has been especially inspiring, as most members also tithe or pledge monthly to the Ministry Fund (critical to the Sangha’s general operations), and therefore donate to both funds.

It is important to understand that the Ministry Fund and the Temple Building Fund are two distinctly (and legally) separate Funds. These strictly service the first mortgage listed below, and once that’s paid off, these pledges go to the second mortgage listed below. (The Ministry Fund handles all the Sangha operations).

In addition we committed ourselves to raise $25,000/yr of ‘Fun’Raising events, such as the annual auction, Gifts of Spirit, the International Dinners, Coin Boxes, and other programs, for the Temple Fund.

Based on these combined pledges of $100,000 per year, and ‘fun’raising income of $ 25,000 per year, a Miracle Match was offered by a group of donors.

In this manner $250,000 per year was raised, which allowed:
The bank to agree to give us 2 mortgages (a most unusual thing for banks to do!):

  • One for $500,000 which they would allow us to pay off with these generous pledges, without penalties by 2012.
  • The second mortgage was for $1,000,000 which we are to pay off over a long term (30+ years). Construction began August 10, 2005!

2006

Construction completed and doors opened for the Christmas Meditation on December 20, 2006.

Most people know that construction costs rarely meet original estimates, and the more unique and artistically sensitive the design, the greater the likelihood of large cost overruns. Another miracle included having obtained the $350,000 additional loan needed to complete the building project. The overall costs including land came to 3.68 million dollars, only 11% over budget!

2007

June 23, 2007 was the formal dedication of the Temple, by Swami Kriyananda, with other special guests: the Consul General from India (based in San Francisco), Senator Rosemary McAuliffe, Mayor Lamb, the Spiritual Directors of all the Ananda colonies worldwide, and over 600 devotees and friends from around the world.

2008

Now the Miracles continue. The first (short term) mortgage of $500,000 was paid off completely in Fall 2008—3 years early!

The beautiful blue-tiled Ananda Meditation temple in Bothell was built on the foundation of one miracle after another.

On April 25, Jyotish and Devi Novak, directors of Ananda worldwide, were the keynote speakers at a Gala Event at the Temple, celebrating miracles and blessings we’ve received in manifesting and sharing this temple which is such an uplifting ‘hive of Realization’. This gala event also launched the next Three-Year Pledge drive needed to continue meeting the commitments of the remaining mortgage. The amount needed for the Temple Building Fund is $10,000 per month.

For those of you who have been pledging these last 4 years:

If you can continue your pledge for the next three years, that would be ideal. This would raise $5,000 of the monthly amount needed!

Please contact Prem-Shanti or Nivritti in the Sangha office to give permission to continue your pledge from July 2009 to June 2012. You can also email them.

  • There are over 50 new active members, who have not yet had the opportunity to pledge to the Temple Building Fund. If everyone who has not yet pledged to the Temple Building Fund makes a 3-year pledge, this could raise an additional $3,000 per month!

  • If we can all work together to successfully continue the Auction and other ‘fun’raising events for the Temple Building Fund for these next Three Years, we can raise the remaining $2,000 per month each year.

If we can work together in these 3 ways, we can meet the $10,000 per month goal!

The Ananda Meditation Temple is not just a spiritual home for many of us, it is also a sanctuary for many new friends who are drawn by its beauty and its promise. And it will be the spiritual home of many new souls for centuries to come!

Your commitment will surely be a spiritual blessing for you, and it will also be a blessing for many not yet born….
